This Stanley London® Clinometer Compass is a Premium Quality solid brass reproduction of a Clinometer pocket transit.
The compass can determine both the magnetic heading of an object, as well as its angle of
elevation or declination.
The solid brass case is over 40 percent heavier than the case of the above clinometer compass.
A pendulous arm can read the vertical angle of an object of elevation or declination.
The interior of the compass lid has a mirror with a slit sighting glass window.
The compass rose is marked in degrees and the inclination scale is printed mirror imaged so that when taking an elevation or declination measurement,
the lid with the internal mirror can be placed in the 45 degree position, and the angle can be read while simultaneously viewing the object.
The compass rose is properly reversed for use as a sighting compass.
The reversed compass rose causes initial confusion with novices, but in use it
is obvious why the compass rose must have East and West reversed.
When you are sighting directly North, the compass needle will point to North.
If you turn 90 degrees to your left, you will be sighting due West, but the compass needle rotated 90 degrees to the right,
which reads West on a properly reversed compass rose.
The compass has a needle lift mechanism to protect the compass jewel and the pendulous arm when being transported.
The compass can fit in a pocket, and measures 3 inches (7.6 cm) in diameter, 1 3/8 inches (3.5 cm)
thick, and weighs 1 pound, 4.4 ounces (580 grams).
Your personalized inscription can be engraved on the back
of this compass, or custom brass plaques are available for the outside
and/or inside lid of the optional hardwood case.
The Premium Quality Clinometer Compass with slit sight is beautifully polished to a high luster, and normally sells for $69.95, but is just $52.45 for a limited time.
We also offer a Hardwood Case which features a handsome inlaid compass rose which is available for an additional $32.95.
Each compass rose is unique and will have slight variations since they will be inlaid using similar hand tools to those used 200 years ago.
Additionally, a wooden hinged case which is made from solid hardwood with felt lining and features brass latches in front for an additional $19.
A leather case is an option for an additional $15.
The case has a rear belt loop and the front of the case is embossed "Stanley London".
A solid brass pocket compass chain is an option for your compass for only $10.50.
The Chain is 14 inches (35.5 cm) overall, weighs 1.1 ounces (31 grams), and has a clasp on both ends for attachment.
